slower Lyrics » Tate McRae

[Verse 1]
Playing cool makes me lose my mind
I can’t be someone I don’t recognize
I’m not the type to have to say it twice
Or wait for you ’til the end of the night
[Pre-Chorus]
I’ve been falling fast and you don’t seem to move
But is it worse for me if I tell the truth?
And are you just a poison that I shouldn’t use?
Wish I could say to you
What I can’t say to you
[Chorus]
We could take it slower
Wait until we’re older
But I might be somebody
You might not even know her
I’m going through changes
It’s a rollercoaster
But I might be somebody
You might not even know her
We could take it slower
[Post-Chorus]
We could take it slower

About Tate McRae’s slower from TOO YOUNG TO BE SAD (2021)

“slower” is about the importance of seizing the moment and taking advantage of every opportunity. Tate urges her love interest to make a move and state his intentions clearly, as she is constantly evolving and changing and has no time to waste. She discussed the importance of honesty and communication in the beginning of a relationship on her 2021
NYLON
interview
:
I think that happens a lot with people. They’re not ready for commitment, so I feel like you just get led on for months and months and months, and then you’re like, “I’m wasting my time.” That’s kind of what this song was about — I can move on and do things, if you just communicate with me and you’re honest.
With the combination of a synthesizer, drums and Tate’s own vocals, the song creates an atmosphere of anticipation. The beat carried throughout the verses is similar to that of a ticking clock, as Tate waits on her potential lover to make a move. Similarly, the beat in the pre-chorus and chorus becomes confrontational, with Tate becoming more pressing regarding the matter.

What did Tate McRae say about “slower”?

This one’s so funny because I wrote this when I was 14, and I loved it. But the problem is, when you sit on a song for two years, it becomes really stale and you just hate it. That’s what kind of happened with this song. So my team pulled it out again and were like, “We should listen to this one again.” And I was like, “No, no, no. I don’t like it, and I sound super squeaky on it. I sound like I’m 14.” We reproduced the whole thing. I rewrote a few lyrics and I recorded it in my 17-year-old voice, and it sounded completely different.
