dear parents… Lyrics » Tate McRae

[Verse 1]
Sixteen, lot on her mind
Got a few friends, left the rest behind
But guess that’s just what happens, people change
Stressed out but is always “fine”
They be asking, but she can’t describe
Maybe, they’re right, it’ll all be fixed with age
[Pre-Chorus]
Hate that you’ve been saying I’m dramatic
Immature because I just don’t wanna talk
You ever think that you might be overreacting?
Promise I’m thinking, overthinking quite a lot
[Chorus]
They say we’re crazy and useless, making stupid excuses
To go make bad decisions when we’re hurt
And we’re not crazy romantics but we still know what a heart is
And know that when it’s cracked it really burns
[Post-Chorus]
Oh, we know more than what we tell you
But can’t always put into words
And we don’t cry because we want to
But you’ll assume it’s because she’s another sixteen-year-old girl

About Tate McRae’s dear parents… from Empty

Although the song title ‘’dear parents…’‘ would indicate that this song is completely directed at parents, Tate has explained that it is actually not. In one of her
videos
, she explained that this song is less of a jab to her parents, and more of an insult to herself:
I feel like, teenagers, when they don’t know how to figure themselves out, they blame it on their parents. Obviously.
Nevertheless, the parents are not entirely blameless either:
It’s kinda weird because our parents went through it before. Then why do they react to our choices like they’ve never heard of them before?
Tate tried to capture the disagreements with her parents and struggles with herself on this track. In the explanatory video, she pronounced her wish to write about how difficult it can be to be a teenager sometimes:
I have the most complicated mind ever, and I honestly never know what I am feeling. And I can never, ever, put it into words.

FAQs About dear parents…

Why is it called “Dear Parents” when she’s not even using it in the song?

It’s titled this way because it makes the song read kind of like a letter. These are some things that she wants her parents to know about her, so the title ties it all together in a way.
In a
video
, she explained the meaning behind the song as well.
What did Tate McRae say about “dear parents…”?

Tate has talked about the meaning behind this song on her YouTube video titled, “what my songs are ACTUALLY about…”. She stated:
This song, I would say is less of a jab on parents and more of an insult to myself. You know that I’m never going to understand my own head, but I don’t expect you to understand it either. By that, I mean I have the most complicated mind ever and I honestly never know what I’m feeling and I can never ever put it into words. Like, when someone asks you, “What’s wrong?” I literally don’t know. If I did know, I would tell you and I would solve all my problems, really. I based this song off of a 16-year-old girl.
I feel like teenagers, when they don’t know how to figure themselves out, they blame it on their parents, obviously. It’s kind of weird, because our parents went through it before. Why do they react to our choices like they’ve never heard of them before? We’re gonna make stupid decisions. We’re gonna be irresponsible, sometimes and we’re gonna mess things up, because we’re still learning.
Sometimes, my parents were like, “Oh, you’re still caught up on that guy.” No, that’s not consuming all my mind. Things may not be best decisions ever, but we’re learning and we’re gonna get through it. Doesn’t mean we’re irresponsible, or overdramatic, or crazy. We’re just trying to figure ourselves out. Just trying to figure out our purpose and where we stand.
