Hollywood Lyrics » Madonna

[Verse 1]
Everybody comes to Hollywood
They wanna make it in the neighborhood
They like the smell of it in Hollywood
How could it hurt you when it looks so good?
[Chorus]
Shine your light now
This time it’s got to be good
You get it right now, yeah
‘Cause you’re in Hollywood
[Verse 2]
There’s something in the air in Hollywood
The sun is shining like you knew it would
You’re ridin’ in your car in Hollywood
You got the top down and it feels so good
[Verse 1]
Everybody comes to Hollywood
They wanna make it in the neighborhood
They like the smell of it in Hollywood
How could it hurt you when it looks so good?
[Verse 3]
I lost my memory in Hollywood
I’ve had a million visions, bad and good
There’s something in the air in Hollywood
I tried to leave it, but I never could

About Madonna’s Hollywood from American Life (2003)

“Hollywood” was released as the second single from
American Life
. Musically, it is a electro-folk, synth-pop song. Lyrically, it discusses the concept of American culture and its greed, with its focus on Hollywood, pictured as a place of illusory dreams.
Its
music video
was directed by French fashion photographer
Jean-Baptiste Mondino
, who has already previously worked with Madonna. In the video, Madonna is seen in different styles and fashions, recreating the work of French fashion photographer
Guy Bourdin
. Madonna had been a fan of his work for a long time,
commenting on his photographs
as “sick and interesting”. However, the photographer’s son
filed a federal lawsuit
, accusing Madonna, Mondino and Warner Bros. of ripping off the work of his father. A financial settlement was made, and the details are confidential.
Mondino talked about the concept of the video:
Some kind of artifice that Hollywood can provide, that is so wide and has a graphic story-line about it as well as some humor about it, and to show the beauty, the scariness, the sexiness and the loneliness that one’s success can be, ‘cause everybody’s dreaming about Hollywood, no matter what. The expectation can be very dangerous, and maybe for somebody like Madonna, who might be at a point, to realize that to be on the top is maybe not that important. That’s what I feel about the video.

What did Madonna say about “Hollywood”?

‘Hollywood’ for me is like a metaphor, it’s the city of dreams and superficiality, it’s the place where you go and diverts your attention from the things that are really important in life, in Hollywood you can lose your memory and your vision. the future . you can lose everything because you could lose yourself.

What has Mirwais Ahmadzaï said about the song?

“Hollywood” producer Mirwais Ahmadzaï:
“‘Hollywood’ was a very old song. We weren’t satisfied with the original version, so Madonna found an alternative melody. I used a very minimalist drum kit with old percussion I found in an E-mu sampler bank. I used an old drum loop in addition to the basic programming for the disco feel of it. I needed to use a smaller-sounding kick because I wanted to have the bass synth sound very big. The bass is the Nord Lead Rack 2 with a lot of filtering manipulations. I had many problems with that. When I started to use the filter on the Nord Lead, I had to change the bottom; it lacked weight. I had to find exactly the right frequency on the Yamaha O2R mixer. It was very hard to find the right kick, too, because if I chose something bigger, the track would have sounded like an average club track. The vocals were recorded with heavy compression in her headphones to help her to get the feeling of the performance. We experiment a lot with vocal sounds. For example, the pitch-down vocal at the end was initially much longer. The mix of this one was very hard — like almost all tracks — because there was so much stuff going on. This is why maybe the final version is so simple.
