About Fleetwood Mac’s Silver Springs from Rumours (1977)

Written during the sessions for
Rumours
, the Stevie Nicks-penned “Silver Springs” was left off of the record due to time constraints. It was included as the B-side to the album’s lead single,
“Go Your Own Way,”
to which it’s something of a response.
Years later, the song drove a deeper wedge in an already strained relationship between Nicks and drummer Mick Fleetwood. Nicks sought to include it on a greatest hits package of her own material, but Fleetwood wanted it for a box of material celebrating the band’s first 25 years.
During the reconciliation for
The Dance
, the tune re-emerged, finding new life in its live version and emerging as a late-career hit for the band.
A road sign for Silver Spring, Maryland, helped inspire Nicks to write the song.
