The song revolves around Ellie grappling with lingering thoughts about an ex-lover and a lack of emotion about the relationship.
In an
interview with Elvis Duran,
Ellie explained how this unique viewpoint was created.
One day we were at the
Max Martin
compound, and we were just randomly talking about having somebody on your mind that shouldn’t necessarily be on your mind. And you can’t figure it out why they’re still there. I talked to friends about it, and I realized it was quite a common thing. Just having this strange situation of not necessarily being with that person anymore, but them still being around for whatever reason, and then just kind of trying to figure out why. So I think the song was the figuring out of why.
The song is seemingly about her relationship with singer Ed Sheeran, as a response to Sheeran’s previous single ‘Don’t’.

I think lyrically a lot of my fans will go back to when I first started releasing songs even on to Myspace and things like that because I was very explicit and honest with my lyrics and I would literally just sing what I was thinking,“ Ellie told us. “I think it’s genuinely gone back to that. I think for the past couple of years I’ve maybe been filtering out lyrics quite a bit and going for a more typical kind of pop structure, but this song, we had so much fun writing it, it just comes back to that basic thing of having that person just constantly stuck in our head. I’m sorry to all the people that want it to be about someone – it’s not, it’s like a myth. I like guys with tattoos, my boyfriend has tattoos…but I don’t mind. People can read into it however they want. It’s fun to do that, I would do that too.
