Brightest Blue Lyrics » Ellie Goulding

[Verse 1]
Everything is heightened now
It’s looking so much brighter now
I was lost and now I’m found
Fell off the merry-go-round
I was into politics
Obsessed with things I couldn’t fix
Kissing bigger with a fist
Addicted to the thrill of it
[Pre-Chorus]
And with these
Colors fading, people changing feelings
Faking some kind of love
A different flavor, seek the danger
Feel new life rush into my blood
Illuminated, never shaded
See the future when I look in the sky
When I look in the sky
You give me, you give me
[Chorus]
The brightest blue, blue
Blue, blue
The brightest blue, blue
Tonight (Blue, blue)
Give me the brightest blue, blue (And now I see no beauty in retrograde)
Blue, blue
The brightest blue, blue
So bright (Blue, blue)

About Ellie Goulding’s Brightest Blue from Brightest Blue (Digital Edition) (2020)

‘Brightest Blue’ is the title track and the final song on the first side of the record. The song ends with a triumphant, upbeat song with orchestra and a great vocal performance from Ellie.
As well as a musical feeling of closure and finale, the lyrics of this song also explore this. It explains Ellie looking back and thinking about how she found herself and journey to it.
This then brings the album to a thematic resolution. The phrase “Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven” can be used to describe this record. The song is less Ellie finding heaven, but like an epilogue from years after, catching you up on her life.
Brightest Blue shows this theme, however it also shows a sense of longing for us to stay in this state forever.

FAQs About Brightest Blue

What did Ellie Goulding say about “Brightest Blue”?

I talk about ‘the blue evolution’ in this song. I think it’s my version of a happy, peaceful place. It’s about getting yourself to a place of harmony where even when bad stuff does come along and you find yourself in hard times, you can deal with it in a very different way because you’ve discovered this harmony in yourself. I was also conscious when I was writing this album that we were doomed and something was happening and the world was changing. I think a lot about the natural world and about how much we’ve destroyed it. For this song, I envisaged things connected with nature and flowers and all the beautiful things we associate the outdoors with. It was like a utopia—kind of like reaching this place of incredible enlightenment. I think the most poignant lyric on the album for me is ‘Maybe because we’re doomed, we’re whole.’ So it’s just sort of accepting fate and just being in a state of like harmonious kind of acceptance. Then there’s the lyric ‘You’re my greatest revelation,’ which, again, wasn’t necessarily referring to a person, more to an energy. Like my greatest revelation was like the fact that I’ve reached this point of ultimate independence. It’s so crucial and it really is a recurring theme of the album. And I was in such a good place that I think that it was like a hyper kind of happiness.
