, produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange under the Atlantic Records Label.
According to lead guitarist Angus Young in an interview with Creem, the inspiration for the song came from the brooding sound of the main chords.
In the interview, Young made a point of emphasizing that songs such as Evil Walks and Highway to Hell are, after-all, “just songs,” and that he was tired of religious people bothering him.
The song appears to have two themes running throughout it; the idea that evil is everywhere we turn, and a small story about a Black Widow woman.
Black Widows are women who are known for literally or figuratively killing men they’ve been in relationships with. They’re named after the Black Widow spider, who (for some reason, more famously than other spiders) bites the heads off the male spiders after mating.
