, wrote the song by basing on the movie’s story: its main character is
the American runner and Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini
, who got captured by Japanese armies in 1943, during the battles of World War II in the Pacific Ocean, and sent to a prison camp for two years, throughout those “The Bird”, a Japanese sergeant, constantly beat Louis in a psychotic fury.
After his liberation, in 1949, in an effort to get over his trauma, Zamperini took part, together with his wife, to the
Los Angeles Crusade
, a campaign by the evangelist Billy Graham: the experience made the former athlete convert to Christianity and taught him the power of forgiveness and love, so he could have mercy on his persecutors.
