. The lyrics and melody were inspired by John Ireland’s 1664 hymn “My Song Is Love Unknown,” which is also Chris Martin’s favorite hymn.
Around the time that Coldplay was recording

, Chris Martin’s father-in-law passed away. “A Message” may have been written for his wife Gwyneth Paltrow, who reportedly (and understandably) went into a depression after her father’s death (Martin supposedly wrote “Fix You” as a way of cheering her up).
