Bad Habits Lyrics » Ed Sheeran

[Intro]
(One, two, three, four)
Ooh, ooh
[Verse 1]
Every time you come around, you know I can’t say no
Every time the sun goes down, I let you take control
I can feel the paradise before my world implodes
And tonight had something wonderful
[Chorus]
My bad habits lead to late nights endin’ alone
Conversations with a stranger I barely know
Swearin’ this’ll be the last, but it probably won’t
I got nothin’ left to lose, or use, or do
My bad habits lead to wide eyes starin’ at space
And I know I lose control of the things that I say
Yeah, I was lookin’ for a way out, now I can’t escape
Nothin’ happens after two, it’s truе, it’s true
My bad habits lead to you
[Post-Chorus]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lead to you
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lеad to you

About Ed Sheeran’s Bad Habits from = (Equals) (2021)

On “Bad Habits,” Ed Sheeran reflects on past habits of constant drinking and late night partying and what these actions tend to lead to. No matter how pure Ed’s intentions are at the start, the night brings out a different side of him that garners darker results.
The vampire costume seen in the music video reflects the dark side of him and displays the ‘bad habits’ he carries with himself.
With each song on this album representing a specific moment in his life, Ed noted that “Bad Habits”
derives from his desire to be fully present as a new father.
Specifically, he wanted to curb habits of partying and drinking so that he could be ready to take his then-pregnant wife to the hospital whenever her water broke.

FAQs About Bad Habits

What has the artist said about the song?
Verified Commentary
Ed Sheeran
via
Apple Music
I’m very aware that I’ve never really done dance songs solo, and I’ve always had that in my back pocket as something I wanted to try.
Fred
and his brother go by
Rain Radio
, and I wanted to make something like their track
“Talk About”
—not for me to sing, just a club banger. I went home and I had five or six songs I’d made that day. I played them to my wife [Cherry Seaborn], and as soon as “Bad Habits” came on, she was like, ‘That. You should expand on that.’ So we did. If you stripped the dance beat away from this and sung it on a piano, it would fit on x or + quite well. I became a dad and I needed to cut certain things out that were detrimental to my body, basically.
What has the artist said about the negative reaction this song received?
“Bad Habits” has now become a hit for me and I get to play it live, but the reception for it was really negative when I put it out, people were just like, “Ugh, what’s that? No, no.” I think [that happened] because it’s dance music and it’s a different thing, and I’m an acoustic singer/songwriter, you know? It’s a different thing. But I stand by it ‘cause I love it and I loved the feeling of creating it. Creating it in the studio was exciting and I was excited for people to hear it, so when it came out and there was, like, a lukewarm, if you could call it that, reaction, I was like, “I believe in this, I like it, I think it will do well,” and it took a bit of time. And this is the thing, I say to people now ’cause no one believes me. When it came out, it was a very lukewarm reaction and it wasn’t a great day one streams, it wasn’t a great week one streams, it wasn’t a great month one streams. But I think if you can stand by something and you believe in it, I think that’s enough for your career, and everything that I’ve made up to this point, I can look back on and be like, “I like that.” And I actually think that’s all that matters as an artist. And this is why, sometimes, artists don’t play the “hits” when they play live, they’re like, “Oh, I don’t wanna play that song anymore,” and I think it’s because they never liked it in the first place. I don’t wanna speak for artists and what they feel though.

Why did Ed choose this song as the lead single?
Ed noted that while picking other singles such as
“Sing,”
“Shape of You,”
and
“Thinking Out Loud”
that there is usually no pressure or outside influences, but with England planning to
come out of its COVID-19 lockdown in June
, he and his team opted to go with the larger dance track to match the feeling and emotion as opposed to a ballad.
